New Microscopy Technique Reveals Atomic Ferroelectric Transition Details

October 12, 2026

최신 회사 블로그 New Microscopy Technique Reveals Atomic Ferroelectric Transition Details

In the rapidly evolving field of materials science, understanding the phase transition mechanisms and domain wall dynamics of ferroelectric materials like barium titanate (BaTiO₃) is crucial for enhancing their performance in capacitors, sensors, and actuators. However, achieving atomic-level precision observations across wide temperature ranges has remained a significant challenge.

Unprecedented Atomic Precision with Cryogenic TEM

A groundbreaking study published in Microstructures by Professor Leopoldo Molina-Luna's team at Darmstadt University of Technology has overcome these limitations. Using DENSsolutions' Lightning Arctic system, the researchers achieved unprecedented atomic-scale observations of single-crystal BaTiO₃'s phase transitions and domain wall evolution across temperatures.

The Lightning Arctic system's exceptional in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) cooling capabilities proved instrumental. By utilizing a built-in cooling rod to transfer cryogenic temperatures to MEMS nanochips holding samples, the system achieved liquid nitrogen temperatures within the TEM chamber. Remarkably, the team maintained minimal sample drift at -175°C while obtaining atomic-resolution images.

Thermal Dynamics of Domain Structures

The study revealed intricate relationships between phase transitions and domain configurations in BaTiO₃. Through precisely controlled heating protocols, researchers documented the material's transformation from rhombohedral (R) to orthorhombic (O), tetragonal (T), and ultimately cubic (C) phases. At low temperatures, the orthorhombic phase exhibited zigzag patterns composed of 60° and 120° domain walls, while the tetragonal phase showed prominent 90° a-c type ferroelastic domains.

Cryogenic Domain Wall Kinematics

The research team captured real-time domain wall movements during cooling cycles, observing 71° and 180° domain wall interactions in the rhombohedral phase. These high-resolution observations provided new insights into how spontaneous strain and polarization mechanisms govern domain stability at nanoscale levels.

Advancing Ferroelectric Materials Science

This study demonstrates the Lightning Arctic system's capability for atomic-resolution observations of phase transitions across extreme temperature ranges. The ability to track structural evolution during both heating and cooling processes establishes a foundation for future multifunctional material research under various stimuli.

"DENSsolutions' Lightning Arctic system enables us to conduct phase transition studies with atomic-level precision in TEM environments," remarked Professor Molina-Luna.

This technological advancement follows previous applications of DENSsolutions' Lightning systems in studying metal-ceramic interactions, where 4Å resolution was achieved in analyzing Al-AOL-SiC systems under heating and biasing conditions.
